My dear Sisters, Friends, and Compatriots:
I am making this appeal to draw attention to a cause that can serve all of us—The Hellinida Foundation.
The Hellinida Foundation is the only plan of its kind that actively works to promote and instill pride in Hellenic women. It is an organization that works to bring together women of Hellenic descent from all over the world in a spirit of collective achievement. Its mission is three-fold and corresponds to the three phases of a woman’s life: Kore, Gynaika, and Giagia.
EDUCATE: KORES
For our Kores, the young maidens in our community, Hellinida Foundation educates and promotes Hellenic ideals and cultivates the values central to Hellenism and Orthodoxy. It delivers talks and lectures to schools and church groups, organizes seminars important to the life issues of young women making the transition from maidenhood into young adulthood. It aims to inspire young maidens to reach their potential by discovering their rich heritage, connecting them to their Hellenic virtues and Orthodox spirituality.
EMPOWER: GYNAIKES
For the “Gynaika” phase of a woman’s life, Hellinida Foundation will help orchestrate networks, forums, and events, some online, some in-person, that will enhance professional, financial and psychological well-being. The Hellinida Foundation aims to empower the busiest phases in a woman’s life by acting as a clearinghouse of information and support. As part of this phase of its mission, it endeavors to set up a micro-funding platform and serve as a bank of financial information to encourage financial independence and to spark Hellenic women’s entrepreneurship. It is not news that our home country is in the throes of a financial and political crisis. However, that crisis has unleashed opportunities for growth as evidenced by the skyrocketing of women-owned business in Greece as a result. Now is the time more than ever to support female entrepreneurs in Greece and abroad by linking them to mentors, funding opportunities and connecting them to sources of capital. Now is the kairos for women to enhance their business networks in a spirit of cooperation and collective prosperity.
CELEBRATE: GIAGIADES
The Giagia: The last phase of a woman’s life is perhaps its most powerful. It is for this phase that the Hellinida Foundation will foster storytelling events, seminars, and cultural exhibits aimed at celebrating the rich accomplishments of our mothers, daughters, and giagiades. The Hellinida Foundation will organize speaker events around the theme of Hellenic women’s identities both in the US and in the Diaspora. It will work to generate pride and foster self-esteem in women whose cultures do not perhaps publically recognize them for all the greatness they display. As such, Hellinida Foundation works at raising women’s consciousness about their worth, promoting a healthy sense of self-esteem by creating a forum where they can voice their issues and arrive at creative collective solutions. When was the last time a woman of Hellenic descent was extolled in the mainstream media? The website published alongside the Hellinida Foundation will serve as the media arm to publicize the accomplishments, focus on issues, and educate its members and the larger public about the unique voice and perspective of Hellenic women.
The Hellinida Foundation was created to focus attention on that extraordinary Hellenic woman that is you. It is committed to celebrating achievements, empowering Hellenic women financially, professionally, and emotionally and educating the new generation of Greek woman by keeping them close to their roots.
